Sevdaliza told me earlier this year, when we spoke for her GEN F profile. Hero, the new single from her upcoming debut album, ISON, is about the very first idol so many of us have: our mothers.
The production starts off sparse, spotlighting Sevdaliza’s anguished vocals. The post-dubstep programming eventually turns tragic and crystalline, like a massive chandelier crashing to the ground. “I could never make you love me,” she sings on the hook. But “Hero” explores rejection rather than swims in it, asking what our own perceptions might be doing to encourage our unhappiness. Sevdaliza shared a short passage over email about the song: “When you go through many lives, you have many heroes,”
